Need to Change Schools in Canada? We Can Help.
International students in Canada may choose to transfer between Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) due to changes in academic goals, program dissatisfaction, personal reasons, or institutional closures. At Sapra Immigration Services Inc., we help ensure that your transfer is done correctly — keeping your study permit compliant and avoiding immigration complications.
What Is a DLI Transfer?
A DLI Transfer refers to changing from one Designated Learning Institution (DLI) to another while you are already studying in Canada on a valid study permit. You must update Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) with your new school details to maintain compliance with your permit conditions.
Examples of valid DLI transfers include:
● Changing from a private to a public college
● Switching between provinces
● Moving from an ESL pathway to a full-time diploma program
● Transferring due to school closures or delays
How to Notify IRCC of Your DLI Change?
To stay compliant, students must:
✓ Log into their IRCC secure account
✓ Select “Transfer from DLI”
✓ Enter new DLI number and student ID
✓ Submit the update to IRCC
This must be done as soon as you receive confirmation of enrolment at the new institution. Failure to report your transfer may result in future permit issues or refusal of PGWP.
When You Need to Apply for a New Study Permit?
You must apply for a new study permit if:
● You are changing your level of study (e.g., from high school to college or college to university)
● Your current permit will expire before your new program begins
● Your new school has different conditions (e.g., province-specific requirements)
We help assess whether a simple DLI update or a full study permit application is needed.
