What is a PGWP?
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit that allows international students who have completed an eligible Canadian program to gain valuable Canadian work experience. This experience can be used toward a pathway to Permanent Residency (PR) through programs like Express Entry’s Canadian Experience Class.
You do not need a job offer to apply for the PGWP, and you can work for any employer across Canada.
Who is Eligible?
To qualify for a PGWP, you must:
● Be at least 18 years old
● Have completed a full-time program of at least 8 months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that is PGWP-eligible
● Apply within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of program completion (e.g., transcript or letter)
● Hold or have held a valid study permit
● Have maintained full-time enrollment throughout your program (with limited exceptions)
🚫 Important (2024–2025): Certain private institutions are no longer PGWP-eligible. Check with our RCIC before enrolling.
PGWP Validity Period
Your PGWP validity depends on the length of your program:
Program Length | PGWP Duration |
8 months to less than 2 years | Same as program length |
2 years or longer | Up to 3 years |
Master’s program (16–23 months, no scheduled breaks) | Up to 3 years |
Two programs within 2 years (min 8 months each) | Combined length (up to 3 years) |
In Quebec:
For vocational programs (DVS or AVS), a combined total of 1,800 hours can lead to a 3-year PGWP.

Prepare the following:
● Valid passport (not expiring soon)
● Copy of current or recently expired study permit
● Letter of completion and official transcript from your DLI
● Digital photo
● Medical exam results (if working in healthcare, childcare, or education)

3. Upload documents and pay fees
4. Monitor application through IRCC portal
You must apply within 180 days of completing your program.
Can You Work While Waiting?
Yes — if you:
● Had a valid study permit at the time of PGWP application
● Were eligible to work off-campus during your studies
● Have completed your program and applied before permit expiry
You can work full-time while your application is being processed (under maintained status).
What Happens After a Decision?
If Approved:
✓ You can work full-time for any employer in Canada for the duration of the permit.
If Refused:
❌ You must stop working immediately
🛠 You may explore restoration of status, other immigration options, or apply again if eligible.
Why Work Experience Under PGWP Matters?
Work gained during your PGWP can :
● Make you eligible for Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry
● Improve your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score
● Allow you to qualify for PNPs (Provincial Nominee Programs)
