What is a Co-op Work Permit?
A Co-op Work Permit is a special authorization that allows international students in Canada to complete the mandatory work or internship component of their academic program.
If your program includes a co-op, practicum, or internship requirement, you must obtain this permit in addition to your study permit before beginning the work portion.
Who Needs a Co-op Work Permit?
You must apply for a co-op work permit if:
- You hold a valid study permit
- Your program includes a mandatory work placement
- The work placement is essential to complete your program
- The work portion accounts for 50% or less of the total study program duration
You do not need a co-op work permit if the work is optional or not part of your academic requirements.
Documents Required
To apply for a Co-op Work Permit, you must submit:
✓ A Letter from your DLI confirming the co-op or internship is part of your program
✓ A valid study permit
✓ A valid passport
✓ Details of the work placement (if known)
✓ Medical exam results (if working in health care, child care, or elderly care)
Important Conditions
- The co-op work permit is only valid for the employer(s) and location(s) tied to your academic program
- You cannot use this permit for off-campus part-time work; your study permit provides that right
- This permit is free of charge
- You should apply before your co-op term begins
When to Apply ?
Apply for your co-op work permit:
- At the same time as your initial study permit (if applicable), or
- After arriving in Canada, but well before your work term starts
Processing times may vary, so early application is recommended.
