What is Family Sponsorship?
The Family Sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their close family members to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents. Sponsored individuals gain the right to live, work, and study in Canada indefinitely.
Who You Can Sponsor ?
You may sponsor:
● Spouse or common-law/conjugal partner
● Dependent children (biological or adopted)
● Parents and grandparents
● Other eligible relatives (e.g., orphaned siblings, one-time sponsorship of another relative under specific conditions)
Sponsor Eligibility
To be a sponsor, you must:
● Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
● Be 18 years or older
● Reside in Canada (or plan to return if a citizen living abroad)
● Be financially responsible for the sponsored person
● Not be in default on previous undertakings, immigration loans, or court orders
Financial Responsibility Period
Sponsored Person | Financial Undertaking Period |
Spouse / Partner | 3 years |
Dependent Children | 10 years or until age 25 |
Parents / Grandparents | 20 years |
Other eligible relatives | 10 years |
You are responsible for their basic needs: housing, food, clothing, healthcare (not covered by public insurance), etc.
Application Process
There are two parts to the sponsorship process:
1. Sponsor Application (you apply to IRCC to become an eligible sponsor)
2. Permanent Residence Application (your family member applies for PR)
Steps:
1. Confirm eligibility and gather documents
2. Submit both applications together to IRCC
3. Complete biometrics, police checks, and medical exams
4. Await IRCC decision
5. If approved, the applicant receives a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR)
