What Is Study Permit Restoration?
If your study permit has expired and you did not apply for an extension on time, you may still have a chance to regain your legal student status in Canada through the restoration process — provided you act within 90 days of losing status.
Important: You cannot continue studying until your restoration application is approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

You may need to apply for restoration if:

● You want to return to studies and resume your program legally

● Completed IMM 5709 form (Application to Change Conditions or Extend Stay as a Student)
● Letter of Acceptance (LOA) or proof of continued enrollment
● Explanation letter outlining why restoration is being requested
● Proof of funds for tuition and living expenses
● Valid passport copy
● Payment of $150 (study permit fee) + $200 (restoration fee)
Additional documents may include medicals, transcripts, or custodian declarations (for minors).
What Happens After You Apply?
Once you submit your restoration application:
● You cannot study or work until IRCC restores your status
● You must remain in Canada while awaiting a decision
● If approved, you will receive a new valid study permit
● If refused, you must leave Canada immediately to avoid further consequences
